Historic Preservation and Restoration
Zivkovic Connolly approaches historic preservation as the careful continuation of a building’s architectural life. Our work includes the restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse of landmark townhouses, country estates, institutional buildings, religious structures, and significant historic interiors in New York, elsewhere in the United States, and abroad.
Each project begins with a close study of the existing building, its history, materials, construction, and defining architectural character. Original masonry, plasterwork, woodwork, decorative finishes, windows, and other significant features are preserved or restored wherever possible, while new interventions are designed to support contemporary use without diminishing the integrity of the historic fabric.

Successful preservation requires more than reproducing historic appearances. It requires an understanding of traditional materials and craftsmanship, existing structural conditions, current building codes, and the sensitive integration of new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire-protection, accessibility, and life-safety systems.
