A Six-Story Gallery Stair
At the center of the home, the existing stair was structurally reinforced with steel to allow the surrounding walls to be opened, forming a dramatic six-story vertical gallery. This central volume functions as the organizing element of the house, with artwork displayed across all levels, in some cases spanning multiple floors.
A new glass skylight at the roof brings natural light deep into the townhouse, illuminating the stair gallery from top to bottom.
Living Among the Collection
This Upper West Side townhouse renovation transforms a 6,000-square-foot historic building into a contemporary single-family residence designed around the display of an exceptional private art collection.
Undertaken as a full gut renovation, the project restores the townhouse to its original single-family configuration for a couple and their three young children while introducing a refined, gallery-like architectural language throughout.
Contemporary Living and Restored Details
Original architectural elements were carefully restored and reinterpreted throughout the renovation. Historic wood arches and the original inner handrail were preserved, while new glass guardrails were introduced to maintain clear sightlines to the artwork and reinforce the openness of the central gallery space.
The renovation also includes a new rear addition and penthouse level, custom-designed art lighting, and dedicated art storage spaces supporting both the display and preservation of the collection.
Designed as both residence and gallery, the townhouse creates an architectural response to living with art at every scale.
